Behind The Mask

What happens when we take our masks off? When does the REAL (insert YOUR name here) get to stand up? To be known? To be seen? To be loved?

A group of 12 artists came along on a journey to learn more about themselves, their interactions with others, and how we participate in the world.

Join us for TWO NIGHTS ONLY as 12 local artists show up authentically embodied – body, heart, and head – and EXPLORE these questions as they creatively EXPRESS THEMSELVES using storytelling, spoken word, monologues, music, and dance to allow you to see BEHIND THE MASK.

Sneak-a-Peek Behind The Scenes of This Production

It started with an invitation to go on an adventure!

14 artists answered the CALL TO ACTION… and I’m so glad they did!

Three months ago I met with the main cast of “BEHIND THE MASK” in my backyard for the first time and we started off on our journey together.

What I knew going into this project was:

  1. I had a lot of talented people at my table (WOWZA!)
  2. We had all been through A LOT with the surprise of a lifetime in the form of a world pandemic and a two year quarantine.

Many of us spent the better part of the past two years in isolation or behind a paper or fabric mask, but the truth is most of us have spent our lives behind an invisible mask too. Behind our personalities we hide some of the best, most juicy, most awesome parts of ourselves.

We met weekly on Saturdays to workshop what BEHIND THE MASK would become. During this time we meditated, journaled, checked-in around the table, and learned the importance of being present… and on time. We learned about how we show-up in the world, took a look at our patterns and what motivates us and also learned the difference between our Essence (who we were born to be) and our Personality (who we show to the world). The artists were challenged to express both their shadow and light as they performed weekly assignments which addressed the 4 following statements:

1. The masks we wear in life.

All the world’s a stage

And all the men and women merely players.

-W.S. – As You LIke It

2. The literal masks we wore during the coronavirus.

3. The lessons we learned – what we observed about ourselves and our world – living behind masks over the past two years and over the course of our lives.

And finally, and MOST IMPORTANTLY –

4. Coming out from behind the mask.

*The Hero’s Journey is not complete if they do not come back and SHARE what they have learned.

So… here we are three months later and it seems WE’VE ARRIVED!

They completed the first three criteria –

NOW – it’s time for them to RETURN and SHARE what they’ve learned along the way!
